Pagan is such a crude word and in this context it lumps the Persian Mithras
cult and European folk traditions in together, when they really have nothing
to do with each other. There is no real correct pagan version, and the
Christian version, for what it's worth is equally correct.
Even so, in my own Traveller Universe, at least among the "jump set" (yeah,
that's like jet set) and others who have been integrated into the Imperial
calender Holiday is very much a gift-giving holiday not too far off of
Christmas.

Although I may integrate some ideas from the Christmas episode of Futurama
into my Traveller Universe! ;)
I'm developing Terra (era 1120 in the G:T timeline) for SJG. Right now I'm
thinking that virtually *none* of the nation-states of the late 20th Century
still exist in any significant form in the Third Imperium era.

I mean, think about it. . .how many nation-states of about 1650 BC still
exist today? Ignoring the question of whether there *were* any nation-
states in the modern sense that far back, you get maybe two: Egypt and
China.
Sorry, guys; I have been replying off-list so far, but this is too much.
Yes, the initial thrust into Canada by militia and jumped-up colonels who
were shopkeepers the day before were pushed back. HOWEVER, America also
captured and destroyed the British base in York (Canada, not England),
captured Ft. George, and won the lake battles on Erie (making Erie, in many
ways, an 'American' lake for many years) and Champlain. Also, *regular*
American forces drove General Proctor into Canada, where they pursued his
forces, caught them, and destroyed them. And, unlike an earlier post, the
British were stopped at Ft. Meig, Ft. Stephenson, Sackett's Harbor and
Baltimore (where my great-etc. grandfather was a captain in the regular
army). So the statements that 'America only won a single battle' and 'the
British army marauded up and down the East Coast unopposed' are simply
wrong. There was a great deal of traded land, bad decisions, and weird
coincidences on all sides.
And, again unlike an earlier post, the American navy did not have a limited
impact. The new American frigates inflicted so much damage that the British
navy was under orders to flee unless the American ships were outnumbered.
there were three occasions when American ships destroyed three british ships
in one day and a single American ship captured 10 British ships in one
month. That's pretty impressive.
So, while the U.S. lost Buffalo, Detroit and Niagara, they also captured a
fair amount of territory around Erie; more importantly, they proved that
American regulars could meet and beat the British regulars and that American
ships and crews could beat British ships and crews. While the U.S. had
suffered some early losses and embarrassing defeats, they certainly had the
initiative, especially at sea. This may explain why the British were willing
to return their strategic gains - if they were winning, why do that?

Doubtfull, as in canon, we have several intervening steps. By IY 1050,
Terra is a captured and occupied world, under the thumb of the Imperial
Marines. (See Supp 10.

The IM are quite likely to create geographic regions for cantonment that
are NOT congruent with priot political boundaries; this allows you to blame
internal violence upon purges by the "Locals from across the old border".
Also, said cantonments are likely also to be set up for the convinience of
the IMC, not the redidents.

Likewise, the Solomani confederation arises (Like the phoenix) out of the
ashes of the Terran Confederation. The 3I had recaptured the terran sphere,
including earth, following the long night. More than likely, the "States of
Terra" are NorAm, SoAm, NorAf, SoAf, Euro, Slavia, Orient, Oz, and Arabia,
at least by the time the Vilani occupation resolves into imperial
membership; in the 600's, IIRC, the Solomani Sphere gains internal Autonomy.

As far as ethnicity goes, I think it likely that Terrans will still be
predominantly ethnic in the orient, slavia, africa and arabia.... (Slavia
refers to Russia, the baltics, Eastern Poland, the Ukraine, the Balkans,
and their cultural dependancies. Western Europe, asuming the EU evolves
into a super-gov't, will result in its members becoming more alike, along
with making cultural enclaves more common throughout.
I'm thinking about bidding on Simba Safari on EBay, maily because of
my manic obsession with starship deckplans. I haven't seen any
Judges Guild products for Traveller before, though - did anyone see this
module? What do you think of the safari ship deck plans that come
with it? How do they compare with the GDW plans from the Safari
Ship adventure?
Kiri, you don't drive? Neither does my wife. Make some decisions about
where to go and how to get there very easy.

ObTrav: how common are the public transport networks, and how costly to
use?
Well, if I get the (smallish) apartment I'm looking at (near Market on
Beale) there is a rec room with plenty of room and couches and a kitchen
attached and what have you, in addition to my own living/dining room.
I take it this means you are anti-Fed?

(sorry, that was tongue-in-cheek after reading your views on the gun thread!)

This is a perfect example of Imperial attitudes prior to the Rebellion. Each
little portion of the Imperium had an undercurrent of dislike for the central
government, even though - in the Imperium's case - it kept the peace and kept
out of local politics.

When a serious challenge arose to the legitimacy of the Throne, each little
"state" found reasons to go their own way. After all, what has the central
government ever done for us? I mean, it only gave us a focus, gave us unity,
protected us from our surrounding enemies by presenting a unified fighting
force, gee, is that all, what else?
Judges Guild Traveller products are cheap fun. The adventures are mostly
dungeon crawls in space and the stock is about half step above newsprint,
but there are a few useful products. The deck plans in Simba Safari are on
a large, fold out sheet and are quite useable, but I can't vouch for how
close they may be to tech-geek correct. BTW, if you want a copy and don't
win the eBay auction, I have three unopened copies for sale on The Traveller
Trader at seven bucks each ;-)
I actually have an electronic singing Purin (Jigglypuff in America) that
plays the song. It plays for a specified number of minutes so that you
can go to sleep hearing it and I use it for a timer.
